The Save the Bees Campaign
Spring 2021 Semester
(Umass Amherst MASSPIRG Chapter)

NO BEES. NO FOOD

The Problem?
Honeybee populations have been on a deadly decline in recent decades, and in the winters of 2017 & 2018 US beekeepers reported an average loss of 30-40% of their hivesHabitat loss, pesticide use, pathogens, climate change, and invasive species are synergistically threatening native bees in North America-

Bees play an essential ecological role in pollinating flowers and commerically contributing to nearly $10 billion per year to U.S. crop production, and 35% of the entire world's food crops

Campaign goals for this semester:
Petitioning and raising public awareness to pass H.D. 1267 "An Act to Protect Massachusetts Pollinators" which would restrict the sale, purchase, and use of neonicotinoids to licensed and certified private applicators Completing the last steps in getting UMass Amherst Bee Friendly certified through Bee City USAAwaiting on ground assembling of pollinator hotels in the Franklin Permaculture Gardens
